What is a website accessibility audit?

Updated October 2026

A website accessibility audit is a full checkup of your website for the problems that stop people with disabilities, and older customers, from using it: buttons a screen reader can't name, forms without labels, text too light to read, pages that break when zoomed in, menus that only work with a mouse.

Audit vs. automatic scan

An automatic scan is fast and useful, and it's what our free scan is. But scanners catch only part of the problems. The problems that stop a real customer from finishing a booking or an order usually take a person to find, so in an audit a person goes through your site the way customers do.

Audit vs. a widget

Accessibility widgets add a menu on top of your site, but they don't fix the code underneath. In 2025 the FTC ordered accessiBe, a widget maker, to pay $1 million over claims that its tool could make any website compliant (Federal Trade Commission, 2025). An audit finds the problems; fixes change the code.

The standard behind it

Audits are measured against WCAG 2.2 AA, the web accessibility guidelines that U.S. courts and the Department of Justice look to.
